Introduction

This work, inspired by a poem and an image: the footprints left alone in the sand, might seem like an imaginative idea. In reality, founded on the Word of God and in the faith of the Holy Church, it would like to be an attempt to translate the experience of Cistercian anthropology into terms we understand.

I deliberately avoid using “Cistercian spirituality”, as this term, in contemporary culture, has taken on a very dubious content. Furthermore, the Cistercian experience is not a “spirituality” at all, but an anthropology. It is the path of man’s “recovery” and development, up to the full maturity of Christ Jesus.
